4 Shutter Myths Dispelled

April 03, 2017

We do a lot of speaking with homeowners about shutters in Bluff City.

And although it may be surprising, when we talk with people across Bluff City, we hear a couple of myths about shutters floating around. Let’s take a few minutes to set the record straight and dispel some of the most common myths about plantation shutters so you can make the perfect choice for your home when investigating new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Simple to DIY

Many home projects can easily be done by yourself in a single weekend. Installing shutters probably isn’t one of them, though.

Putting in new shutters can be tricky from the start, as the measurements of the window dimensions need to be very precise to ensure an easy and tight fit, as well as to make sure your windows can still open and shut. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, hoisting big shutters and installing them straight may present a rough task. If just one step of the process is done incorrectly, you might end up with misshapen shutters or draftiness from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Will Make The Home Look Dark

New home designers might shy away from shutters, believing they’ll make a space look “too dark” or dimly lit. This myth most likely comes from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.

Think of this: light from the sun always comes into your home from an angle. Shutters let you change that angle by adjusting their louvers, granting you more effective control over how much light comes inside. And don’t forget, shutters can still swing completely open to allow as much light as you might want.

Myth: Shutters Are Expensive

It’s true that shutters won’t be as cheap as discount rack blinds from a home improvement store. But this myth is all about how you think about shutters. If you’re thinking them simply as a plain decoration that you don’t expect to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters can be fairly expensive. But shutters are a lasting addition to your house, and come with multiple benefits: shutters are energy efficient and are shown to lower heating and AC bills, they can add to your house’s appraisal value, and shutters can last generations, unlike blinds–which will need to be replaced over and over again.

Myth: Shutters Make a Home Look Old-Timey

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” has something to do with the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it certainly isn’t accurate. While shutters were frequently used in older home styles throughout the years, their crisp, clean lines and neutral shades let them fit in with more fashionable, modern designs just as well. Shutters are the pinnacle of versatile window treatments.
