What To Expect During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Jacob Hayes

To help you choose the best window treatments for your rooms, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to your home, we can demonstate how various window coverings would work in your room. You’ll discover how natural it is to find the perfect treatments when you get out of the unrealistic showroom.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how does bringing samples to your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Some companies may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will find during your Sunburst consultation.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by scheduling an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to show you a variety of options available for your preferred treatment. We will also offer additional treatments, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your ideal.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and talk about what you need in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also want to know how the room is used and what style you are looking to attain. And it’s normal if you don’t know percisely what you need, as we’ll walk you through your options.

That may require going through different products until we find the perfect window treatment for you. Most people need to look at a few different treatments, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the perfect stain to coordinate with your color scheme. We’ll also show you all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only plan to fit treatments for some of your windows. We perform this service because most of our customers ask to be able to order future window treatments with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Signs Of A Subpar In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will perform compentent in-home consultation, there are some things you should never experience from any window treatment company. As they say, the quality of your sales representative usually equals the quality of the product.

Above all else, your salesperson should be careful and professional. The rep should come to your house on time, clean and presentable, and offer to protect your floors with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing details.

In regards to pricing, you should always get a full written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, jotted down on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates without window measurement. You should always know how much you should pay and why. Don’t forget to ask for references and online reviews.
