Measuring Your Windows For Shutters in Kingsport

Jacob Hayes

Interior shutters in Kingsport are almost always sold by the square foot, so to get an approximate measurement for a price quote, simply measure your window width and length, to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.

Measuring Rectangular and Square Windows for Shutters

Typical rectangular windows look like the easiest kind of windows to measure – and that’s because they are, compared to other window shapes. But you still have an entire process to go through to get measurements. Here’s how to do it.

The Tools That You Need:

  • Metal tape measure

  • Pen and paper

First, measure the width (the left-to-right distance). Get a measurement across in three separate spots: near the exact center, close to the top, and close to the bottom of the frame. Record all of them, to the nearest ⅛ of an inch. Then, measure the length (vertical) – take three measurements, one in the middle, and one close to either edge of your window as shown in this illustration.

Measuring in three spots for each dimensions is important because no window is an absolutely perfect square. And depending on what kind of mount your shutters will need, you may need to get either the smallest measurement (for an inside mount), or the absolute largest measurement (for an outside mount). Getting measurements in multiple spots helps make sure your bases are covered.

How to Measure Non-rectangular Windows for Shutters

Non-rectangular windows are the windows that can present a challenge to measure. Just as there’s no perfect square window, there’s no such thing as a perfect semicircle or arch window – which means it’s not as simple as getting a width and height. If you want the best results, get a professional measurement (which our team is happy to do for free). Otherwise, these are the steps to measure the most common unique-shaped windows for shutters.

Measuring Arched and Semicircle Windows for Shutters

Measure the width of the window at the flat bottom. Measuring only the window opening, record to the closest ⅛ of an inch the width of the arch. For the height, locate the halfway point of the window by dividing the width measurement in half, then measure to the end of the rounded part of the window from the point you found. Again, write it down to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.

How to Measure Elongated Arch Windows for Shutters

Elongated arch windows are almost like a combination of a square window and a circular window, with a flat, wide bottom and vertical “legs,” but with rounded top edges and a taller arch. So attack it like that: an arch and a rectangle put together. Measure the width like you would any other arch, then record the length of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). Last, measure the max length of the window from the middle of the width, subtracting the height of the legs. Like always, write down every measurement to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.

Measuring Circular & Octagonal Windows

Circular and octagonal windows are some of the hardest to measure, as there can be so many small features that can alter the shutter dimensions your window might need. It’s usually best to leave these windows to professionals.
