Which window treatments improve privacy?04/30/2018Jacob Hayes Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like the majority of homeowners, finding window treatments in Kingsport that offer privacy and noise control to maintain your sanctuary is important. Any window covering is better than a bare window. Yet there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, especially on hard to cover windows.Providing Privacy on Hard to Cover WindowsAll of the large, square windows in your home are a snap to cover with almost any window treatment like Kingsport shutters, drapes, or blinds|. You might encounter some situations when you need a specific style of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These might be:Bathroom windows where water and humidity may ruin fabric window treatments.Sidelight windows that are tall and skinny on which window treatments can be pushed around by the door’s movement.Irregular windows like eyebrows, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where typical store-bought blinds and shades can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.Large windows that are impossible to reach such as second-story foyer windows. In these instances, you need window treatments that go the distance to add privacy to your house. As a bonus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing. The Best Window Treatments for PrivacyThe most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when total privacy and light control is what you need. To let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For taller windows, you can always keep the louvers tilted at an angle to let light in while still maintaining privacy. Plantation shutters are also great for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re perfect for bathrooms.Another privacy-friendly window treatment is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from moisture-resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for PrivacyWhile any window treatment gives you at least some privacy, there are two that aren’t as great as those we’ve mentioned. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a an airy feeling to a room. However they’re easy to see through, particularly at night.Another product we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or bulky blinds, which can snap and/or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t close the blinds all the way due to breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.Want Window Treatments that Protect Your Privacy? If you're shopping around for window treatments that protect your privacy, then drop us a line at 276-378-7422 or complete the form below to set up a free in-home consultation.
